Champions Clash at Ally Pally
Peter Wright, the charismatic Scot nicknamed "Snakebite," delivered a monumental performance on Sunday night, dismantling reigning champion Luke Humphries 4-1 to secure his spot in the quarter-finals of the World Darts Championship at Alexandra Palace.
At 54, Wright turned back the clock, drawing inspiration from two rising stars of the sport.
“Luke Humphries and Luke Littler inspire me to carry on playing darts,” said Wright, visibly emotional after defying expectations in a match that upended the formbook. With previous championship wins in 2020 and 2022, the veteran reaffirmed his belief that he’s far from done. “I’m not ready to go to the senior side yet because I know I can still play this game. I know I can get better.”
Wright’s victory came on the back of a near-flawless performance, averaging just under 101 and landing 70% of his doubles. In contrast, Humphries struggled to replicate the magic that earned him the title last year. Despite his success, Wright remained critical of his own game. “I struggled throughout, just trying to find the rhythm. There was only one throw that felt right in the entire match,” he admitted.
Price and Rydz Shine in Dramatic Showdowns
Former world champion Gerwyn Price also advanced to the quarter-finals with a gritty 4-2 win over compatriot Jonny Clayton. Price showcased flashes of brilliance, including a 107 average early on, but admitted he wasn’t at his peak as the match dragged on. Nonetheless, he secured the win with a respectable average of 92.28 and a checkout percentage of 36.1.
Callan Rydz, meanwhile, continued his incredible form, demolishing Dimitri van den Bergh in a 4-0 whitewash. The world number 43 from Newcastle remains unbeaten in sets this tournament and now faces Robert Owen in the fourth round. Owen, ranked 77th globally and juggling a part-time delivery job, stunned Ricky Evans 4-2 to claim the biggest win of his career.
Dramatic Finishes from Doets and De Graaf
The drama didn’t stop there. Dutchman Kevin Doets staged a sensational comeback, defeating Krzysztof Ratajski 4-3 to set up a clash with 15th seed Chris Dobey. Meanwhile, Jeffrey de Graaf, representing Sweden, earned his place in the last 16 with a commanding 4-1 win over Paolo Nebrida. De Graaf’s 10-dart finish in the final leg capped off a career-best showing, earning him a date with third seed Michael van Gerwen.
