Carrie Coon Rejects Marvel
Carrie Coon’s absence from Avengers: Endgame was reportedly the result of a salary dispute, according to her husband, Tracy Letts.
Coon, who portrayed the villain Proxima Midnight in Avengers: Infinity War (2018), was offered a chance to return for the epic 2019 sequel. However, despite the opportunity, she ultimately turned it down.
On a recent episode of The Ringer’s The Big Picture podcast, Letts explained that Marvel did not offer Coon a higher payment for Endgame, which led to her decision to decline the role. He shared, “I believe [Marvel] went to her for the second one, and they asked her to be in the second one. And she said, ‘Well, the first one is the most successful movie ever made. Are you going to pay me any more money?’ And they said, ‘No. We’re not going to pay you any more money.’”
Coon had previously cited a scheduling conflict as the reason for not returning, but she also left the door open for potential future roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. "No one ever dies. It’s very possible I could have my own Avengers movie next," she quipped during an interview with PeopleTV's Couch Surfing. "But I wouldn't hold your breath."
Although she didn't appear physically in Endgame, her voice was used in an uncredited role.
Discussing her initial casting, Coon recalled the secrecy around the project, saying, “I got a voice-over audition; it was not specified what the project was. They were being very secretive about it, but I was given some of the lines that did end up being in the film." The Russos, who directed the Avengers films, were keen on having her bring the character to life physically as well, inviting her to the set in Atlanta. At the time, Coon was pregnant and performing in a play but still made the trip. “I was an athlete in college, and so it was very physical work that I enjoyed tremendously,” she added.
Coon and Letts, who first met in 2010 while working together on Broadway’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, married three years later. The couple has two children, Haskell (born in 2018) and a daughter born in 2021, whose name remains undisclosed.
