McSteamy Battles ALS
Eric Dane, known to millions as “McSteamy” from Grey’s Anatomy, has revealed he’s been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a rare and currently incurable neurodegenerative disease.
The 52-year-old actor confirmed the news in an exclusive with People, sharing that he's confronting the condition with the support of his family. “I have been diagnosed with ALS. I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter,” he said.
Despite the diagnosis, Dane expressed optimism, stating he plans to continue working and will return to the set of Euphoria in the coming days.
ALS, sometimes referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease, affects motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord, leading to progressive paralysis. The average life expectancy post-diagnosis is typically three to five years, though some, like the late physicist Stephen Hawking, defy the odds by living much longer.
The timing of Dane’s announcement is poignant. It comes just a month after he and actress Rebecca Gayheart, 53, decided to officially stay married — nearly six years after she first filed for divorce. The couple, who share two daughters, Billie (15) and Georgia (13), have been open about redefining their relationship in a way that prioritizes family unity.
Gayheart recently spoke to E! News about their evolving bond, calling them “great co-parents” who’ve discovered a way to stay close for the sake of their children.
ALS most commonly affects those over 50, though it can, in rare instances, strike much earlier. Symptoms often begin subtly — with muscle weakness, cramps, or trouble speaking — and gradually progress into more debilitating physical challenges.
Dane’s revelation adds a sobering layer to what had recently been a hopeful chapter in his personal life. With the backing of his family and professional community, his journey now turns toward resilience and advocacy in the face of a life-altering illness.
