Controversial Doctor Who Edit
Huw Edwards, the disgraced former BBC presenter, has officially been removed from a Doctor Who episode following his criminal conviction. The BBC took this action after Edwards admitted to possessing indecent images of children.
Previously, the BBC had withdrawn the 2006 episode, Fear Her, last year but later reinstated it on BBC iPlayer with significant alterations. Edwards' voice originally featured in a mock news report within the episode's depiction of the 2012 London Olympics. The updated version now includes a disclaimer: “This programme has been edited since broadcast due to legal, contractual, or technical issues.”
Voice actress Becky Wright has replaced Edwards in the edited version. Her lines now read: "My God, what’s going on here? The crowd has vanished, they’re gone, everyone has gone..." which mirrors the original lines delivered by Edwards, albeit with a different tone.
Edwards’ original voice, which had been broadcasted in 2006, included a similar shock, stating: “My God, what’s going on here? The crowd has vanished, they’re gone... it’s impossible."
This latest alteration comes on the heels of Edwards' conviction last year, which resulted in a suspended prison sentence and the return of his salary by the BBC. The broadcaster emphasized that such removals are rare, with a spokesperson explaining: "We do consider the continued use and re-use of material on a case-by-case basis."
Since his conviction, Edwards has faced significant personal and professional fallout, with several universities, including his alma mater Cardiff University, stripping him of honorary titles, while public tributes like a mural and plaque were removed.
