A Voice for Hope
Davina McCall, 57, took to the podium at All Saints Church in Fulham, sharing her deeply personal experience with an audience united by a common cause: brain tumour awareness.
Earlier this month, McCall underwent surgery to remove a benign brain tumour called a colloid cyst, a discovery made during a health scan offered to her in exchange for delivering a menopause talk.
Her introduction at the event was both poignant and symbolic, with neurosurgeon Kevin O’Neill — who performed her operation — presenting her. Their connection was evident as McCall embraced O’Neill warmly before stepping forward to share her story.
“I’m not going to cry… I’m crying already,” McCall began, candidly acknowledging her emotions.
She spoke with heartfelt compassion, acknowledging the struggles of those affected by brain tumours. "Many of you are on your own journey or have lost loved ones to this illness," she shared, reflecting on her own losses, including her sister Caroline in 2012 and her ex-father-in-law last year.
In an Instagram post showcasing photos and videos from the night, the charity expressed gratitude to McCall, calling her "a powerful voice for this cause."
When initially announcing her diagnosis, McCall described the cyst as “big” but reassured her followers it was “very rare,” with odds of having one being “three in a million.” She explained the upcoming craniotomy procedure in her characteristically relatable tone: "They go through the top of my head here and through the two halves of my brain to the middle. They get the cyst, take it out, empty it, and Bob's your uncle."
Following her surgery, McCall updated her fans with a video from home, sharing that her short-term memory was slightly impaired, but she remained optimistic, using lists to stay organized.
Her advocacy adds another dimension to a remarkable career that began in the 1990s with MTV and Channel 4’s Streetmate, leading to her iconic role as the host of Big Brother (2000–2010). Currently, she hosts ITV’s My Mum, Your Dad.
McCall, a mother of three, has lived with hairdresser Michael Douglas since 2022. Honored as an MBE last year for her broadcasting contributions, her openness about her journey highlights her dedication to raising brain tumour awareness and inspiring others to face challenges with courage.
