The British film scene is grieving the loss of celebrated cinematographer Dick Pope, who has passed away at 77. Acclaimed for his stunning visuals in films like Mr. Turner and The Illusionist, Pope made an indelible mark on the world of cinema. The British Society of Cinematographers confirmed his passing, sharing their heartfelt condolences: “It is with great sorrow that we announce the loss of our cherished friend and esteemed colleague, Dick Pope BSC.”

Pope was celebrated not only for his technical skill but also for his unique vision and collaborative nature. His early work earned him a BAFTA nomination for Porterhouse Blue, which paved the way for an impressive collaboration with director Mike Leigh. Over the years, they teamed up on 11 films, including Life is Sweet and Vera Drake. Leigh poignantly remarked on Pope's artistry, stating, “A violinist who owns a Stradivarius doesn’t randomly choose another instrument; that is their tool, and they create wonders with it.”

Throughout his illustrious career, Pope earned an Oscar nomination for his stunning work on Mr. Turner and contributed to notable films like The Way of the Gun, Me and Orson Welles, and Motherless Brooklyn. He also collaborated with prominent directors such as Chiwetel Ejiofor, Gurinder Chadha, and Barry Levinson. Pope's last project was Hard Truths, a London-based drama by Mike Leigh that received rave reviews at this year’s Toronto Film Festival. Earlier this year, Leigh disclosed that Pope underwent significant heart surgery before embarking on the film, underscoring his unwavering commitment to his craft.
