Honoring Steve Wright
BBC Radio 2 has revealed that Nicki Chapman, renowned for her Early Breakfast show, will be the new voice of Sunday Love Songs, stepping in temporarily following the sad departure of the much-loved Steve Wright, who passed away at 69 on February 13. The announcement comes amidst tributes and memories shared by colleagues, friends, and listeners, celebrating Wright’s four-decade-long illustrious career in broadcasting.
Wright, whose voice became synonymous with Sunday afternoons, hosted the beloved Love Songs, touching hearts with his mix of romantic tunes and listener dedications. His final show, aired just two days before his unexpected death, showcased his characteristic humor and warmth, leaving fans with a poignant goodbye.
In the wake of Wright’s passing, the radio community and listeners alike have felt a profound loss. Liza Tarbuck, Wright’s friend and colleague, initially filled the silence left on Sunday Love Songs with an emotional tribute, dedicating the program to Wright's memory. Similarly, Gary Davies, another BBC Radio 2 stalwart, shared his heartfelt sentiments while presenting Pick of the Pops, highlighting Wright’s role as a “broadcasting giant” and a personal friend.
Gary Davies said: “On numerous occasions over the last 40 years, I’ve sat in for Steve when he was on holiday and I’m still finding it hard to come to terms with why I’m sitting in for him for just one final day today.”
As the station mourns, Nicki Chapman steps forward, bringing her own style to Sunday Love Songs until Easter. “It will be a privilege to present Sunday Love Songs in the coming weeks,” Chapman stated, inviting listeners to join her in celebrating love and memories, underscored by the heartfelt stories that have always been at the heart of the show.
Steve Wright’s brother, Laurence, shared a personal insight into Steve’s life off-air, attributing his brother’s untimely death to lifestyle choices, and expressing a poignant wish for more awareness about health and well-being.
Wright's enduring impact on radio and the countless listeners who invited him into their lives every week is undeniable. As BBC Radio 2 and its audience look to the future, the legacy of Steve Wright’s love songs will continue to resonate every Sunday morning, now under the guidance of Nicki Chapman.
