In a significant diplomatic move, British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly has raised concerns about the arrest of British citizen Jimmy Lai during a meeting with China's Vice President. Lai, a well-known British businessman and founder of Hong Kong's pro-democracy paper Apple Daily, has been held in solitary confinement since 2021 due to his criticism of the Chinese Communist Party.

Sebastien Lai, Jimmy Lai's son, has expressed worries, emphasizing that Cleverly must advocate for his father and uphold British values while engaging with China's Vice President.

Lai's arrest under China's National Security Law resulted in charges for seemingly minor actions, drawing international criticism. Despite this, he received prison sentences, raising concerns about trial delays and fairness.

While Cleverly's approach faced criticism within the Tory party, the cross-party Foreign Affairs Committee urged the UK Government to consistently address Lai's case and that of others detained by China.

Caoilifhionn Gallagher KC, a member of Lai's legal team, labeled the delay a "charade," questioning the fairness of the legal process.

Cleverly acknowledged the complexities of dealing with China, highlighting the visit's intent to discuss contentious issues such as Hong Kong and human rights in Xinjiang.
