Jarmusch Slams Climate Deniers
Acclaimed filmmaker Jim Jarmusch delivered a fiery critique of climate change denial during a prestigious awards ceremony, as devastating wildfires swept across Los Angeles.
While honoring Anora director Sean Baker with the Best Screenplay award at the New York Film Critics Circle on Wednesday night, Jarmusch seized the moment to stress the critical importance of addressing the climate crisis.
“We are all worried about our friends in L.A.,” he began, before emphatically stating: “Climate crisis is brought to you by climate [change] deniers.”
Renowned for his groundbreaking indie classics such as Coffee and Cigarettes and Stranger Than Paradise, Jarmusch voiced his discontent with critics of progressive movements, stating: “They’re trying to spin ‘woke’ as something bad. Well, I’m here to say, it’s time we wake the f*** up!”
His remarks followed a swirl of controversial statements from high-profile figures, including Elon Musk and Donald Trump. Musk recently lent credibility to conspiracy theories tying the devastating fires to California’s diversity policies, labeling them a "globalist conspiracy." Meanwhile, Trump redirected blame for the crisis onto Joe Biden, alleging that the president’s policies led to California’s water scarcity — a claim widely debunked by experts.
California’s Governor Gavin Newsom countered Trump’s bizarre assertion that a nonexistent "water restoration declaration" could have solved the state’s issues. Newsom instead emphasized the dire need for rain and sustainable water management.
L.A.’s rainfall has been staggeringly low, with downtown receiving just one-fifth of an inch since July — the second-driest period in over 150 years, according to CalMatters.
