Shobna Gulati, widely recognized for her standout performances in Coronation Street and Dinnerladies, has been honored with an MBE for her remarkable impact on the cultural and creative industries. At 57, the Oldham-born actress has carved out a multifaceted career spanning television, theatre, and presenting. Her impressive stage repertoire includes roles in Mamma Mia!, Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, and Richard II. Additionally, she has graced screens as a panellist on ITV's popular talk show Loose Women.

Alan Yentob, the BBC’s former creative director, has been recognized as a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for his significant impact on the arts and media. At 77, Yentob’s career spans decades, starting as a general trainee at the BBC in 1968 and culminating in his leadership roles, including his tenure as creative director from 2004 to 2015. Known for developing and presenting the flagship arts programme Imagine…, Yentob has been a key figure in British broadcasting. “It’s a privilege to have been part of shaping stories that resonate with so many,” he remarked. His career also weathered challenges, including stepping down from his BBC role following the collapse of the charity Kids Company, where he served as chairman.

Monica Ali, author of the acclaimed Brick Lane, has received a CBE for her contributions to literature. Born in Bangladesh and raised in England, Ali gained fame with her debut novel exploring identity and immigration, earning a 2003 Man Booker Prize nomination and a 2007 film adaptation. Her recent work, Love Marriage, won the 2022 South Bank Sky Arts literature award.

Other honorees in this year’s King’s Birthday Honours include songwriter Gerry DeVeaux, knighted for his extraordinary contributions to entertainment and humanity, and fashion designer Stuart Vevers, who has been made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his achievements in the fashion industry, including his work as creative director of Coach.
