Independent film studios in the UK
The independent film, television and video game industry will receive multi-million dollar budget funding to develop new competencies, create jobs and reach new audiences around the world. This is announced on the government's website.
Many independent films, including Living by Oliver Hermanus, Good Luck to You, Leo Grande by Sophie Hyde and The Miracle Club by Thaddeus O'Sullivan, starring Dame Margaret Natalie Smith, Laura Leggett Linney and Kathleen Doyle Bates.
It is worth noting that these films could premiere quickly at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, as they have received distribution assistance from the fund and other projects have been co-produced.
The funding will be used to increase exports of British films, TV shows and video games to new markets. It will support the distribution and marketing of UK content overseas, help producers promote their work at film festivals and support companies in recruiting and working with new staff with specialist skills to increase global audiences.
The government's move towards independent producers will also help UK filmmakers and developers to work on content with international partners.
Companies will be able to apply for international co-production from 17 May. Other collaborations will open up for independent firms shortly thereafter. The total cost of the funding budget will exceed £215 million.
