Banking Shake-up
Barclays, one of the leading banking institutions in the UK, has recently announced plans for the closure of an additional 10 bank branches this year, dealing yet another blow to the struggling UK high street.
The closures will primarily affect branches in England, with nine being closed, along with one branch in Scotland. These closures are expected to take place by the end of September this year.
Among the affected branches are three located in London, as well as branches in Leominster, Cambridge, and Wellingborough. The sole Scottish branch set to close is located in St Andrews.
With these latest closures, the total number of Barclays branches shutting down across the UK this year rises to 132.
In May, Barclays had already revealed plans to close an additional 12 branches across England and Wales, with these closures scheduled for August. The affected locations included Birmingham, Windsor, Worksop, Biggleswade, and Frome, among others.
Barclays aims to mitigate closures' impact on face-to-face banking users by expanding their network with 70 additional pop-up sites and 10 innovative banking pods.
To provide financial advice and support, Barclays runs an educational and support van service, catering to individuals seeking assistance with topics such as saving for a home or establishing a business. The bank also offers an online tool on their website to help customers locate their nearest service.
It is worth noting that Barclays is not the only banking giant closing its physical branches. Lloyds, Halifax, and Bank of Scotland have also recently announced a series of closures, set to occur between September this year and May 2024.
