Christmas Comeback
Ruth Jones, the creative force behind ‘Gavin And Stacey,’ has put to rest the swirling whispers of a Christmas special comeback. The rumor mill had been buzzing with talk of the cast gearing up to shoot a fresh episode for a Yuletide release, which would mark half a decade since the show’s suspenseful cliffhanger. However, Jones set the record straight on RTE Radio 1, labeling these claims as ‘unfortunately, just hearsay.’
Jones suspects that the rumors took flight following a snapshot of her sharing a meal with James Corden, who had recently flown back to the UK from the States. Despite the speculation, the American media outlet Deadline reported that a new special was in the pipeline.
In Jones’ words, “James and I frequently reminisce about ‘Gavin And Stacey’-it’s an integral part of our lives.”
‘Gavin And Stacey’ is a comedic series that follows the titular characters as they navigate a long-distance relationship between Essex and Wales. The show aired three seasons from 2007 to 2010 and made a comeback with a holiday special in 2019. The special concluded with a cliffhanger, with Nessa popping the question to Smithy, leaving the audience on tenterhooks about his answer.
Jones has a soft spot for this cliffhanger, cherishing the unresolved question of their relationship status. The sitcom also stars Alison Steadman and Larry Lamb as Gavin’s parents, with Melanie Walters and Rob Brydon playing the roles of Stacey’s mother Gwen and her eccentric Uncle Bryn.
The series has been the recipient of numerous accolades, including Bafta and British Comedy Awards. Jones has a deep affection for the show and its characters, and she revealed that she and Corden often envision scenarios for the characters.
Garnering a record-breaking viewership of 11.6 million during Christmas 2019, the show resonated deeply with audiences, offering solace during challenging times. By the New Year, the viewership skyrocketed to 17.1 million, crowning it as the most-watched scripted program of the decade.
Following their success with ‘Gavin And Stacey,’ James Corden and Ruth Jones have continued to leave their mark on the entertainment industry. Corden, now the host of ‘The Late Late Show’ in the US, has also showcased his acting prowess in ‘Into The Woods’ and ‘Cats.’ Jones, the creator and star of ‘Stella,’ has expanded her creative repertoire by penning three novels.
