Coronation of the King
A coronation ceremony for Britain's King Charles III will be held at Westminster Abbey in London on June 3, 2023. This was reported by Bloomberg on Wednesday.
It is worth noting that Buckingham Palace declined to comment on the information. At the same time, the agency noted that there were discussions in the United Kingdom government about which days before and after the coronation would be days off.
Heir to the British throne Prince Charles became the new monarch immediately after the death of his mother Queen Elizabeth II on September 8. On the same day it was announced that he took the throne name Charles III. On 10 September he was formally proclaimed King of Britain after a proclamation to this effect was accepted by the members of the Council of Succession at St James's Palace in London.
At the time of the coronation, which formally marks the beginning of the monarch's reign, Charles III will be 74 years old more than any other British king in history.
Earlier British media have stressed that Charles III's coronation will be more modest than that of his predecessors, in view of the economic crisis in the country and the desire of the ruling Windsor dynasty to avoid criticism of profligacy.
According to preliminary information, he will be crowned alongside his consort, Queen Consort Camilla. Bloomberg recalled that in 1953 the coronation of Elizabeth II in Westminster Abbey invited more than 8 thousand people, but now for security reasons the church can accommodate only about 2 thousand visitors, which will be a headache for the organizers of the event.
The British Foreign Office spent several days working out a seating plan for the Queen's funeral, mindful of diplomatic hierarchy and protocol.
The coronation ceremony has a great deal of tradition. For example, the King sits on the throne holding the sovereign's sceptre and staff, symbolising his constitutional control of the nation, and the sovereign's sphere representing Christendom. After Charles is anointed with oil, blessed and consecrated by the highest clergy, the crown of St Edward will be placed on his head.
