Rishi Sunak Under Fire: £5M Donation from Tycoon with Racist Remark

Sunak Under Fire

Rishi Sunak, the Conservative Party member, is under scrutiny following a £5 million donation from Frank Hester, a tycoon infamous for his derogatory comments about Diane Abbott.

The Controversy

Diane Abbott, the Labour MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington, who is currently campaigning for re-election, responded to the donation on Twitter, calling it an affront to her and all black women. In 2019, Hester reportedly made racist and violent remarks about Abbott, which were acknowledged as “racist” and “wrong” by the Prime Minister when they came to light in March.

The Donation

Despite the controversy, Sunak declined to return the £10 million previously donated by Hester. The Electoral Commission recorded an additional £5 million from Hester’s Phoenix Partnership in January and £150,000 in March. The Conservative Party confirmed it would keep these funds for the upcoming General Election on July 4.

Reactions

Labour Chair Anneliese Dodds strongly condemned Sunak, highlighting his failure to reclaim donations from an individual known for his controversial remarks. Dodds emphasized that such comments have no place in political discourse. On the other hand, Mel Stride from the Conservative Party defended the decision on GMB, underscoring Hester’s expressed regret and the diverse representation within the Cabinet under Britain's first British-Asian Prime Minister.

The Aftermath

Abbott recently regained the Labour whip and the right to stand as a Labour candidate on July 4 following an extensive investigation into alleged antisemitism. A Conservative Party spokesperson stated that Hester had apologized for his past comments, showing contrition, and they considered the matter resolved.

Closing Remarks

Daisy Cooper, Deputy Leader of the Liberal Democrats, called on Rishi Sunak to decline donations linked to Stephen Hester, citing concerns over his past racist and sexist remarks. In response, the Conservative Party emphasized their commitment to transparently disclosing all reportable donations to the Electoral Commission, ensuring full compliance with legal requirements.
