Biography

William Mark Wainwright, known professionally as William Orbit, is an English musician, composer and record producer whose career has helped shape electronic, ambient and pop music.

Born in London in 1956, Orbit began building his name in the early 1980s as part of the alternative dance group Torch Song. He later developed a solo career through his Strange Cargo series, which became known for its atmospheric electronic sound and experimental production style.

Orbit reached a wider global audience through his work as a producer, remixer and songwriter. His most famous collaboration came with Madonna on her 1998 album Ray of Light, including the hit single Frozen. The album became one of the most acclaimed releases of Madonna’s career and won multiple Grammy Awards, firmly establishing Orbit as one of the most influential producers of the era.

Beyond Madonna, Orbit has worked with major artists including Blur, U2, All Saints, No Doubt, Melanie C and P!nk. He is also known for Pieces in a Modern Style, his classical-electronic project that introduced his sound to a broader audience.

Across his career, William Orbit has been credited with selling more than 200 million recordings worldwide through his own music, production and songwriting work. He has received multiple Grammy Awards, Ivor Novello Awards and other major music-industry honours.
