Biography
Henry Richard Enfield is an English comedian and actor. He is known in particular for his television work, including Harry Enfield's Television Programme, Harry Enfield & Chums and Harry & Paul, across which he created and portrayed comedy characters such as Kevin the Teenager, Loadsamoney, Smashie and Nicey, The Scousers, Tim Nice-But-Dim and Mr "You Don't Want to Do It Like That".
Career
Enfield first rose to prominence during the alternative comedy boom, gaining national attention through his Channel 4 sketch series Saturday Live. It was there that he introduced audiences to the brash, catchphrase-spouting yuppie Loadsamoney — a character who became a cultural lightning rod during the Thatcher era and established Enfield as a fearless satirist of contemporary Britain.
His breakthrough BBC series, Harry Enfield’s Television Programme (1990–1992), cemented his reputation for sharply observed, character-driven humour. The show later evolved into Harry Enfield & Chums, created in collaboration with Paul Whitehouse and featuring contributions from Kathy Burke. Across its run, Enfield introduced a gallery of enduring comic creations, including Kevin the Teenager, the smug radio duo Smashie and Nicey, The Scousers, the dim aristocrat Tim Nice-But-Dim, and Mr “You Don’t Want to Do It Like That.”
In the 2000s, Enfield reunited with Whitehouse for the BBC sketch series Harry & Paul, which revived several classic characters while adding new satirical takes on British life, politics and class. The series earned critical acclaim and won a BAFTA Award, underscoring Enfield’s staying power in an evolving comedy landscape.
Beyond sketch television, Enfield has built a varied acting career, appearing in films including Kevin & Perry Go Large and taking on dramatic and voice roles across stage and screen. However, it is his creation of instantly recognisable, socially observant characters — rooted in exaggeration yet grounded in truth — that remains his defining contribution to British popular culture.
Over more than three decades, Enfield’s work has combined satire, caricature and cultural commentary, securing his status as one of Britain’s most influential television comedians.
