Robert Gillespie is a Scottish musician, singer-songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist best known as the lead singer and founding member of the alternative rock band Primal Scream. As the band’s primary lyricist and its only continuous member, Gillespie has been the central creative force behind Primal Scream since its formation in the early 1980s, guiding the group through a wide-ranging and influential career that spans rock, psychedelia, electronic music, and dance.
Before achieving prominence with Primal Scream, Gillespie was active in several notable roles within the Scottish and UK music scenes. In the mid-1980s, he served as the drummer for The Jesus and Mary Chain, appearing on their acclaimed debut album Psychocandy before departing the band. He also spent time as the bassist for The Wake, further demonstrating his versatility as a musician.
In October 2021, Gillespie published his memoir, Tenement Kid, offering a personal account of his upbringing, musical influences, and life within the post-punk and alternative music movements that shaped his career.
