Piano Man’s Health Blow
Renowned music icon Billy Joel has officially pulled the plug on all scheduled live shows after being diagnosed with Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH) — a rare and complex neurological condition caused by excess fluid buildup in the brain, leading to pressure on surrounding tissue and potential cognitive and motor impairments.
At 76, Joel had been slated to perform across the U.S. and the U.K., including high-profile shows in Edinburgh and Liverpool next June. Those plans have now been shelved indefinitely.
According to a statement posted on his official Instagram account, Joel has been advised by doctors to suspend touring activities after recent performances worsened his symptoms. NPH can lead to issues with balance, vision, and cognitive function, and is typically seen in individuals over 60.
The statement read: “This condition has been exacerbated by recent concert performances, leading to problems with hearing, vision and balance.”
The artist is currently undergoing physical therapy and focusing on recovery. Fans who purchased tickets will receive automatic refunds.
This isn’t the first time Joel’s health has interrupted his tour plans. Earlier this year, he postponed several dates due to an unspecified medical issue. His return to music had been gaining momentum following the release of his first original song in decades, “Turn the Lights Back On,” which was met with acclaim.
Joel’s last European performance took place in Cardiff last August, where he made headlines for taking a local train to the venue — a humble move from the Piano Man that delighted fans and railway staff alike.
While Joel’s touring future remains uncertain, he closed the announcement with a message to his supporters: “I’m sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience, and thank you for understanding.”
