Inside TV Chef Rivalries

Matt Tebbutt has dismissed suggestions of tension with fellow TV chefs James Martin and Marcus Wareing, insisting their apparent rivalries are far less dramatic off screen.

James became one of Saturday Kitchen's best-known presenters during his decade on the BBC show from 2006 to 2016. Matt later took over as the programme's main host, while James launched James Martin's Saturday Morning on ITV in 2017.

The two Saturday morning shows have often been compared, but Matt has previously rejected the idea that he and James are locked in a genuine ratings battle.

"He's got his audience and I've got mine, sometimes they cross over but it all seems to flow quite nicely."

The chefs have known each other for years and even appeared together on Saturday Kitchen in 2009, when James was hosting and Matt joined as a guest chef.

James, who has now spent around three decades on television, has also stressed that broadcasting has never replaced his work as a professional chef. Reflecting on his decision to leave Saturday Kitchen, he said his restaurant career remained his priority and television was only one part of his working life.

Marcus Wareing has faced similar speculation after viewers noticed teasing exchanges between him and Matt on Saturday Kitchen in 2024.

Matt later played down any suggestion of genuine friction, describing their banter as typical kitchen humour between chefs who have spent years working in demanding professional environments. One recurring joke involved Marcus's country smallholding, which Matt teased him about describing too modestly.

For Matt, the supposed feuds appear to be more entertaining on screen than real behind the scenes.

James Martin's Saturday Morning airs on ITV today at 9.30am and is also available on ITVX.
