Stars Comer Rates Highly

Jodie Comer has revealed that Jessie Buckley and Harry Melling are among the performers she most enjoys watching.

The 33-year-old built her early career on British television, appearing in series such as My Mad Fat Diary and Doctor Foster. Her international breakthrough came with Killing Eve, where her performance as Villanelle earned her an Emmy.

Comer later moved further into film and theatre. She appeared alongside Ryan Reynolds in Free Guy, stars with Hugh Jackman in Michael Sarnoski’s The Death of Robin Hood, and collected both Olivier and Tony awards for Prima Facie.

During an appearance in The Independent’s Life in Pictures series, Comer was asked which actors she particularly admired. Jessie Buckley was the first name she mentioned.

“Immediately, Jessie Buckley comes into my mind. She, to me, just seems so embodied and fearless and I’m always so excited to see what she does.”

Buckley, 36, first became widely known through Andrew Lloyd Webber’s talent programme I’d Do Anything. Her later screen work includes I’m Thinking of Ending Things, The Lost Daughter and Fargo. Earlier this year, she won an Oscar for her performance in Chloé Zhao’s Hamnet, based on Maggie O’Farrell’s novel.

Comer also highlighted Harry Melling, 37. After appearing as Dudley Dursley in the Harry Potter franchise, he went on to take roles in The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, The Pale Blue Eye and Pillion.

The two actors have now worked together on Theo Rhys’ body-horror musical romance Stuffed. Comer explained that she has long respected Melling’s instinct for unusual projects and the confidence behind his choices.

She also spoke about Stephen Graham, a longtime friend and collaborator. Graham helped introduce Comer to his agent after they appeared together in BBC drama Good Cop. The pair later reunited for the 2021 drama Help, and Comer said another project together is likely in the future.

The Death of Robin Hood is currently in cinemas.
