Road Trip After Heartbreak
Greg James has stepped away from his usual Radio 1 routine for a journey around Britain after an emotionally demanding period involving both the loss of his dog and serious concerns over his father’s health.
The 40-year-old broadcaster travelled with his wife, author Bella Mackie, 43, making their way through Lancashire before continuing north to the Lake District. One of their stops was The Inn at Whitewell, a venue linked to Queen Elizabeth II, who was said to have stayed there around her 80th birthday.
The break followed the death of the couple’s chocolate Labrador, Barney, who was euthanised earlier this month. At the same time, James has been supporting his father, Alan Milward, after he suffered a stroke during heart surgery in March and required another operation in June.
James documented parts of the 1,000-mile trip online, revealing that a 1999 Renault Espace and repeated plays of Phoebe Bridgers helped provide the backdrop to the journey.
He wrote: “Drove 1000 miles around the UK in a Renault Espace from 1999 and listened to the Phoebe Bridgers’ album 87 times so yeah I think I’m dealing with it all just fine thanks!”
The couple also spent time paddleboarding and later swam in Windermere. James suggested Barney would have approved of Mackie’s efforts on the water.
Reflecting on recent months, the presenter thanked fans for their kindness and said he was hoping for a quieter spell after an unusually intense year. He also highlighted happier moments from his broadcasting work, including Comic Relief, the charity founded by Richard Curtis and Sir Lenny Henry.
Barney joined James and Mackie after being adopted from Battersea Dogs Cats Home in 2019 and soon became well known to their followers.
The Labrador had previously received specialist veterinary care from Professor Noel Fitzpatrick for joint problems, including treatment connected to a ruptured cranial cruciate ligament.
James has said his father still faces a lengthy recovery following his stroke and subsequent heart procedures.
