Alex Jones admits ‘mum guilt’ after 16 years on The One Show

Alex Jones has admitted she still struggles with “mum guilt” after 16 years presenting BBC’s The One Show.

The Welsh presenter, 49, joined the weekday programme in 2010, replacing Northern Irish broadcaster Christine Lampard. She has since become one of the show’s most familiar faces, working alongside long-serving co-host Matt Baker and following early presenters including Adrian Chiles.

Ahead of The One Show’s 20th anniversary, Jones reflected on the pressures of balancing her career with family life.

“Presenting The One Show is my dream job. I still can’t believe how lucky I am,” she told The Daily Mirror.

Jones shares three children with her New Zealand-born husband of 10 years, Charlie Thomson: Teddy, nine, Kit, seven, and Annie, four.

Because the programme airs in the evening, Jones is often unable to be home for bedtime, although she takes her children to school in the mornings. She said the situation sometimes leaves her feeling that the balance between work and family is wrong.

Jones also revealed that her children regularly come looking for her during the night. She has become relaxed about Annie climbing into her bed, explaining that childhood passes quickly and she wants to enjoy the time while her children are young.

Raised in South Wales, Jones first appeared on television as a contestant on Sky reality show Prickly Heat before working as a researcher. She began presenting at 21 after previously believing a national broadcasting career was unlikely for a girl from Carmarthenshire.

Now one of the BBC programme’s longest-serving presenters, Jones remains open about the sacrifices that have accompanied a job she still regards as a dream role.
