Friends Mourn James Burrows

James Burrows, the acclaimed sitcom director whose work influenced generations of television comedy, has been honored by several members of the Friends cast following his death at 85.

Jennifer Aniston, David Schwimmer, Lisa Kudrow and Matt LeBlanc each marked the loss of Burrows, whose directing career included Friends, Will Grace and The Big Bang Theory. He was also a co-creator of Cheers. His death was announced on Friday.

Aniston, 57, posted a personal tribute on Instagram with images of Burrows alongside the Friends ensemble. She recalled the director as a caring and dependable figure who became closely involved in the cast’s lives while the NBC sitcom was becoming a global hit. According to Aniston, Burrows helped the actors stay united and taught them to look after one another through the pressures of fame.

“I miss your voice. I miss your laugh. I miss your brilliance.”

Schwimmer, 59, remembered Burrows as someone who could make performers feel protected while encouraging stronger, more layered work. The Ross Geller actor shared his message with a black-and-white picture showing him with Burrows and LeBlanc.

LeBlanc, 58, who played Joey Tribbiani, also recognized Burrows’ impact and posted a photo of them together at Wembley Stadium. Kudrow, 62, known for her role as Phoebe Buffay, shared an Instagram Stories tribute featuring herself beside Burrows near his director’s chair.

Burrows’ family told People that he died peacefully with relatives around him. Their statement described him as a beloved creative leader whose television career lasted more than 50 years.

On Friends, Burrows worked within the comedy world shaped by Marta Kauffman, David Crane and Kevin S. Bright. By the end of his career, he had collected 11 Emmy Awards and secured a lasting place among the most respected directors in American sitcom history.
