Bono’s Daughter Talks Celebrity

Eve Hewson has said growing up with U2 frontman Bono as her father gave her a grounded view of fame and stripped away much of its glamour.

The 34-year-old Irish actress, who stars in Bad Sisters and Steven Spielberg’s newly released sci-fi blockbuster Disclosure Day, reflected on celebrity, privacy and public scrutiny in an interview with The Times.

“I think it took (fame) off of a pedestal for me,” she said.

Raised by Bono and activist Ali Hewson, the actress said she has never understood why fame is so widely celebrated, especially when it often means losing privacy and becoming a target for criticism.

Hewson also addressed the advantage of entering the industry with a famous family name. She said the connection made access to film and television easier, but added that it has also created pressure to prove herself in casting rooms and meetings with directors.

Her comments come as her screen career continues to expand across high-profile television and major studio film. In Bad Sisters, created by Sharon Horgan, Hewson became part of one of Apple TV+’s most acclaimed ensembles.

She now stars alongside Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, Emily Blunt and Colman Domingo in Spielberg’s Disclosure Day. She also appeared in the 2024 whodunnit The Perfect Couple with Nicole Kidman, Liev Schreiber and Meghann Fahy, directed by Susanne Bier.

For Hewson, fame appears less like a goal than a complicated side effect of the work. Having seen Bono’s decades in the public eye, alongside U2 collaborators including The Edge, she seems more interested in building credibility than chasing celebrity.
