James Handy Dead at 81: Top Gun Actor Fatally Stabbed as Suspect Called Him ‘Man of Sin’

James Handy Stabbed

James Handy, a longtime Hollywood character actor whose credits included Top Gun: Maverick, Jumanji, Logan and Arachnophobia, has died in Los Angeles after a fatal stabbing. He was 81.

The attack happened on Wednesday morning in Tarzana, a residential area of the San Fernando Valley. Police were sent to the home soon after 9.30 a.m. when emergency services received a disturbance report. According to investigators, the caller allegedly told dispatchers: “I am the son of man, I just killed the man of sin.”

Officers arriving at the scene discovered Handy outside the property, unconscious and suffering from a chest wound. He was taken by paramedics to a local hospital, but doctors were unable to save him.

Michael Gledhill, 44, was arrested in relation to the case. Police said Gledhill is the son of Handy’s girlfriend, who was reportedly living at the same address. Investigators allege he came up to officers after the incident and indicated that he was the individual they were looking for.

Gledhill was detained without resistance and later booked at Van Nuys Jail on a murder charge. His bail was set at £1.5 million ($2 million). Information about whether he has obtained legal counsel was not immediately available.

Detectives are still working to determine what triggered the confrontation. Authorities have described the case as isolated and said there is no continuing risk to the wider public.

Handy’s death has drawn attention to a career that stretched across more than 50 years in film, television and theatre. He built a reputation as a reliable supporting performer, appearing in more than 100 screen projects and bringing credibility to roles that often sat outside the spotlight.

His résumé linked him with some of Hollywood’s most recognisable productions, from Joseph Kosinski’s Top Gun: Maverick with Tom Cruise to the original Jumanji, starring Robin Williams. He also appeared in James Mangold’s Logan with Hugh Jackman and in Arachnophobia, connected to Frank Marshall’s era of mainstream studio genre films.

Industry estimates have placed Handy’s fortune between £0.75 million ($1 million) and £3.7 million ($5 million). He died on 4 June 2026 in Tarzana, where he was living with or closely connected to his girlfriend.
