Hemsworth Teases Kafka Crime Thriller

Chris Hemsworth has offered another glimpse of Kockroach, a new crime thriller directed by Matt Ross, best known for Captain Fantastic.

The project brings Hemsworth together with Taron Egerton, Zazie Beetz, Rachel Sennott, Alec Baldwin and Brian Geraghty. The story comes from William Lashner’s 2007 book, which reshapes Franz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis into a dark tale set inside New York’s criminal world. Instead of a traditional mob origin story, the film follows a strange newcomer who forces his way into the city’s underworld and gradually builds himself into a feared crime boss.

Hemsworth revealed the fresh still on Instagram, presenting it as an “exclusive” preview from the movie. In the image, he and Egerton appear in tailored suits, heavy coats and fedoras, giving the scene the feel of an old-school gangster meeting before sunrise. The visual tone points toward a stylish crime drama with noir elements rather than a straightforward action thriller.

Producer Andrew Lazar has called Kockroach a “fresh and bold take on the gangster genre.” The film’s mood is being linked to the legacy of major mob movies such as Scarface and Goodfellas, which naturally connects the project to the screen traditions shaped by Brian De Palma and Martin Scorsese.

Lazar, whose credits include American Sniper, is producing with Christina Weiss Lurie of Persuasion. Jonathan Ames wrote the adaptation, while Ross also worked on later revisions of the script.

Filming ended in Australia on 31 May. Hemsworth later celebrated the wrap on Twitter/X, posting several black-and-white set photos and describing the shoot as “quite possibly the most fun I’ve had on a set.”

With a cast mixing franchise names, indie favorites and veteran performers, Kockroach positions Kafka’s transformation theme inside a story about reinvention, ambition and power among criminals.
