Griffin’s Health Scare
Kathy Griffin is recovering at home after spending the night in the hospital due to complications from a colonoscopy.
The 65-year-old comedian shared the update Thursday on Instagram, leaning into her usual self-deprecating humor after a video post apparently had audio issues. She told followers she had made the clip because she is “TMI anyway,” then explained that the procedure had led to an overnight hospital stay.
Griffin later assured fans that she was back home with her dogs, prompting supportive messages from followers wishing her a quick recovery.
Colonoscopy screenings are used to examine the colon for colorectal cancer and other abnormalities. They are commonly recommended for older adults because early detection can make the disease highly treatable.
The health update follows several serious medical disclosures from Griffin in recent years. In August 2021, she revealed she had Stage 1 lung cancer and underwent surgery to remove half of her left lung. By December that year, she said she was cancer-free. Last August, she also told Instagram followers she had undergone a hysterectomy after a pre-cancerous screening.
Griffin remains best known for Bravo’s Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List, which ran from 2005 to 2010 and helped define her outsider-Hollywood persona during the network’s Andy Cohen era. She has also released 21 stand-up specials, won two Emmys, and earned a 2013 Guinness World Record for the most stand-up specials by a comedian after Kathy Griffin: Record Breaker.
Her candid, celebrity-skewering style also places her in the tradition of boundary-pushing comics such as Joan Rivers, who helped shape the confessional, sharp-edged lane Griffin later made her own.
Griffin is not the only comedian to recently speak about colonoscopy complications. Amy Schumer said Sunday at a Dear Media event that she had experienced what she described as a botched colonoscopy, adding another celebrity voice to a broader conversation about routine screenings and their less glamorous realities.
