Queen Maeve’s Finale Absence Explained
Eric Kripke has clarified why Dominique McElligott was missing from the last episode of The Boys, confirming that the creative team had hoped to include Queen Maeve but could not make it happen.
McElligott, 40, became a central part of the Prime Video series during its first three seasons. Her character walked away from Vought’s world at the end of Season 3 after surviving a violent blast, letting the public believe she had died so she could escape the company and Homelander, played by Antony Starr.
Maeve’s disappearance left many fans expecting some kind of farewell before the show wrapped. Speaking to TV Insider in an interview published Wednesday, Kripke said he contacted McElligott early enough for the writers to plan around a possible return. The answer, however, was not about the script.
“It was very pleasant and respectful. She just said, 'I've kind of retired from acting. [I'm not] really acting anymore, and I’m busy those dates anyway.”
Kripke described the conversation as calm and friendly, with no dispute behind the scenes. McElligott did not immediately respond to The Independent’s request for comment.
At the moment, The Boys remains the newest acting credit on McElligott’s IMDb page. Before playing Maeve, the Irish performer was seen in House of Cards and The Astronaut Wives Club.
The finale still found a way to acknowledge Maeve’s place in the story. Instead of a fresh scene, the episode used earlier footage and references to show how her defiance helped shape Annie January, also known as Starlight, played by Erin Moriarty, and Marie Moreau.
That idea also connects the series to the larger universe inspired by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s comic books. Maeve may not have appeared in person, but her role as one of Vought’s first major rebels remained part of the ending. Kripke’s explanation was simple: the invitation was there, but McElligott had moved on from acting.
