Fry Addresses Age Gap
Stephen Fry has addressed public curiosity surrounding his marriage to Elliott Spencer, offering a candid perspective on their relationship during a recent appearance on ITV’s The Assembly.
The 68-year-old broadcaster was interviewed by a panel of neurodivergent and learning disabled contributors, using the platform to reflect on both his personal life and the scrutiny that often accompanies it. Fry and Spencer, now 38, married in 2015, just days after confirming their engagement — a swift timeline that drew attention at the time and continues to prompt discussion, particularly around their age difference.
Responding to criticism of age-gap relationships, Fry maintained a measured stance, emphasizing that mutual respect and genuine connection are what ultimately define a partnership. He suggested that external judgments hold little relevance when both individuals are equally invested.
Offering insight into the dynamic of his own marriage, Fry remarked that his husband plays a central role in decision-making, describing a relationship built on trust and balance. “I would say to people that in our relationship, Elliot has all the power, really. He makes a lot of the decisions about things, cos I trust him to. It just works for us extremely well.”
Fry’s openness about his sexuality has long been part of his public identity, dating back to when he came out in the late 1980s — a period when LGBTQ+ visibility in British media remained limited. In recent years, he has revisited those early experiences, including a 2024 reflection on the challenges of growing up gay in a less accepting era.
His willingness to engage in personal topics aligns with a broader tradition among British entertainers such as Sir Ian McKellen, who has similarly used his platform to advocate for LGBTQ+ visibility, and contemporaries like Alan Carr, whose work continues to normalize discussions of identity in mainstream entertainment.
During the The Assembly interview, Fry also encountered more unexpected territory. A direct question about his sex life prompted a moment of visible surprise, which he met with humor while choosing not to elaborate. He later acknowledged that the panel’s frankness had caught him off guard, comparing the experience — tongue firmly in cheek — to the intensity of a Celebrity Traitors roundtable.
The Assembly airs Wednesdays on ITV and ITVX.
