Oscars Joke Sparks Clash
A joke delivered during the 2026 Academy Awards has prompted a swift response from Kid Rock, after host Conan O’Brien took aim at the musician during his opening monologue.
O’Brien, hosting the Oscars for the second consecutive year, referenced several pop culture moments — including Timothée Chalamet’s recent controversy — before joking about an “alternate Oscars” supposedly hosted by Kid Rock at a nearby Dave Buster’s, adding there were still “lots of tickets” available.
The remark nodded to the wider conversation surrounding this year’s Super Bowl halftime programming. While Bad Bunny headlined the official NFL show — drawing record-breaking global viewership — Turning Point USA staged a competing “All-American Halftime Show,” with Kid Rock as its headliner. The alternative broadcast, backed by founder Charlie Kirk, targeted viewers seeking a more conservative-leaning entertainment option.
Kid Rock responded on social media the following day, writing: “I love a good joke, even when I am the butt of it, unfortunately this was not a very good one.” He also used the moment to promote his upcoming “Freedom 250” tour, tied to the 250th anniversary of the United States Declaration of Independence.
The alternative halftime show generated mixed reactions online, particularly after clips of Kid Rock performing “Bawitdaba” circulated widely. The broadcast reached a peak audience of 6.1 million viewers, but was far outpaced by Bad Bunny’s official show, which amassed over 4.157 billion views across platforms in its first 24 hours.
The event also drew political attention. The White House shared footage of the broadcast, while Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth publicly supported it. Donald Trump criticized the official halftime show during the game.
The exchange underscores the increasingly blurred lines between entertainment and politics — where even awards-show jokes can quickly evolve into broader cultural flashpoints.
