SmartLess Pulls Plug
During a recent promotional appearance, SmartLess co-host Will Arnett offered one of the rare behind-the-scenes glimpses into the unpredictable dynamics of his hit podcast, revealing that an episode with a well-known comic was terminated just minutes into the conversation.
Arnett, who co-hosts SmartLess with Jason Bateman and Sean Hayes, described the unnamed stand-up talent as so disruptive that the trio decided to pull the plug roughly ten minutes into the recording. “We cut him off after 10 minutes and said, ‘Thanks so much,’” he told interviewer Romesh Ranganathan.
This candid anecdote arrives amid continued success for SmartLess, which has been a staple of celebrity podcasting since its launch in 2020 and was recently in contention at the Golden Globe Awards, where it lost in the inaugural Best Podcast category to Amy Poehler’s Good Hang.
Arnett also touched on a separate situation involving a female comedian who asked that an already recorded episode not be aired, citing concerns about how it might affect her career. The hosts ultimately honored that request.
While details about the departed guests remain under wraps, the remarks underline the tightrope that celebrity interviewers often walk—balancing star power, personality clashes and production exigencies. The episode adds to a lineage of surprise SmartLess moments, from memorable sit-downs with actors like Will Ferrell to light-hearted discussions with personalities such as Kristen Wiig, illustrating both the appeal and challenges of unscripted conversation in today’s podcast ecosystem.
