Alan Carr’s Traitor Slip
Comedian Alan Carr has revealed that he accidentally let slip the outcome of Celebrity Traitors just hours after filming wrapped, following an ill-timed exchange on another television set.
Carr, 49, was one of the Traitors on the celebrity version of the BBC hit, which aired last autumn and quickly became a ratings success and pop-culture talking point. Despite early doubts about his longevity, he went on to secure victory in a tense finale, outlasting Faithfuls historian David Olusoga and actor-comedian Nick Mohammed.
Speaking on The Scott Mills Breakfast Show, Carr explained that he had fully expected to be eliminated early, particularly after a frank assessment from his agent about his famously talkative nature. Reflecting on the aftermath of filming, he admitted that a joking remark from a cameraman while he was working on Channel 4’s gameshow Secret Genius prompted him to reveal the result far sooner than intended, leaving him feeling “I felt so stupid”.
The comic said he immediately attempted to undo the damage, insisting he had been joking, mindful of the show’s strict secrecy rules and eager not to spoil the outcome for viewers.
Since the series aired, Carr noted that public recognition has noticeably increased. He recounted being spotted while on holiday in Mexico, where strangers jokingly referenced his Traitor persona — a sign of how deeply the programme has permeated popular culture since its return.
Hosted by Claudia Winkleman, The Traitors centres on a psychological battle between Faithfuls and secretly assigned Traitors, who “murder” contestants overnight in pursuit of a cash prize. The celebrity edition saw Carr and his fellow Traitors dispatch a string of high-profile Faithfuls, including singer Paloma Faith, actress Celia Imrie, comedian Lucy Beaumont and Olympic diving champion Tom Daley.
Produced by Studio Lambert, the company founded by veteran television producer Stephen Lambert, the format has been praised for revitalising appointment viewing and attracting an unusually broad audience for a reality competition. Carr’s low-key strategy ultimately paid off, with the comedian remaining largely under the radar until being crowned champion in the series finale.
The full interview with Alan Carr will air on Friday’s edition of The Scott Mills Breakfast Show.
