Minaj’s Political Firestorm
Nicki Minaj is once again dominating headlines after launching a late-night online tirade against broadcaster Don Lemon, intensifying public fallout tied to her highly scrutinised move toward conservative political positions.
The outburst follows months of scrutiny over Minaj’s ideological realignment, a transformation that has fractured her fanbase and sparked one of the most prominent celebrity-focused deportation petitions in recent years. Born in Trinidad and Tobago and long framed as an immigrant success story, the rapper has drawn sharp criticism for praising President Donald Trump after years of opposing his policies.
Minaj’s political shift drew unmistakable attention in December when she took the stage at Turning Point USA’s AmericaFest in Phoenix with Erika Kirk, widow of conservative figure Charlie Kirk. During the appearance, the rapper openly praised Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance, later sharing conservative commentary about the treatment of Christians globally and sharply criticising California Governor Gavin Newsom’s approach to policies involving transgender youth.
Fallout from the appearance was swift. A Change.org campaign urging U.S. authorities to deport Minaj has since crossed 120,000 signatures, even though she remains a lawful permanent resident. Amid the growing backlash, the artist quietly deactivated her Instagram account earlier this year and pulled back from most public-facing platforms.
Minaj re-entered the public conversation on 18 January after weeks of relative silence, directing her anger at Don Lemon over his livestream from a protest outside Cities Church in St. Paul. The demonstration interrupted Sunday worship after activists alleged that a senior church figure also held a leadership role with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Responding online, Minaj issued a blistering attack, writing: “DON ‘C--CK SUCKIN’ LEMON IS DISGUSTING. HOW DARE YOU?”
Lead pastor Jonathan Parnell publicly criticised the disruption, and the Department of Justice has since confirmed it is reviewing the protest for possible violations of federal laws protecting religious spaces. The clash marks another defining moment in Minaj’s increasingly polarising public shift away from her once-progressive image.
