Rugby Star Overlooked
Rugby icon Joe Marler has revealed that his time on The Traitors came with an unexpected identity crisis—one that saw him mistaken not for a rival, but for a member of the crew.
Marler joined the high-stakes BBC series alongside a starry cast that included Alan Carr, Paloma Faith, Jonathan Ross, and Celia Imrie, yet still managed to fly so far under the radar that fellow contestants reportedly failed to clock him as a celebrity at all.
The former England prop shared the story during a New Year’s Eve appearance on The Last Leg, hosted by Josh Widdicombe, Adam Hills and Alex Brooker. According to Marler, the confusion peaked when another participant assumed he was part of the production team and asked him for technical help—prompting his deadpan response: “I’ll do mine first because I am on it with you!”
The revelation added to the evening’s humour, with the hosts suggesting the mix-up may have helped Marler stay in the game longer simply because no one considered voting him out.
Beyond the laughs, Marler also used the platform to pass on strategic advice to future contestants of the Claudia Winkleman–fronted series, which recently returned for its fourth run. His own season ultimately saw Alan Carr take the crown as a Traitor.
The festive edition of The Last Leg reflected on the year’s cultural highs and lows, welcoming guests including Sir Lenny Henry, Phil Wang, Maisie Adam, Dani Dyer, Pete Doherty, Alex James, Lucy Bronze, and Hannah Botterman.
First launched in 2012, The Last Leg has since become a staple of British television, blending sharp comedy with topical reflection—and, in this case, delivering yet another unlikely celebrity confession.
