Battersea Dogs & Cats Home

Battersea Dogs & Cats Home is one of the United Kingdom’s oldest and best-known animal rescue charities, caring for dogs and cats that have been abandoned, surrendered or found without an owner. The organisation works to provide temporary shelter, veterinary treatment and behavioural support until each animal can either be reunited with its owner or placed in a suitable new home.

The charity was founded in Holloway, London, in 1860 before relocating to Battersea in 1871, where it became closely associated with the area and eventually took on its familiar name. Over more than 160 years, Battersea has developed from a local refuge into a major animal welfare organisation with several centres and a nationwide profile.

Unlike government-run services, Battersea relies heavily on charitable support, donations and fundraising to continue its work. Across its three centres, the organisation cares for an average of around 240 dogs and 145 cats at any one time, providing food, accommodation, medical attention and specialist rehabilitation when needed.

Throughout its history, Battersea has cared for more than 3.1 million dogs and cats. In addition to rehoming animals, the charity promotes responsible pet ownership and works to improve wider standards of animal welfare. Its long history and public profile have made it one of the most recognisable rescue organisations in Britain.
